Frequently Asked Questions

  • An Endocrinologist is a hormone specialist, managing glands in your body including your thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands.

They also specialise in the care of diabetes, insulin resistance, osteoporosis, weight loss, menopause, oestrogen and testosterone deficiency.

  • The symptoms you experience depend on the hormone gland involved and whether it is over-active or under-active.

For example, an over-active thyroid may lead to symptoms of weight loss, diarrhoea, a fast heart-rate or shaking hands.

  • Dr Shoung consults in all areas of General Endocrinology with a specific interest in pituitary disease, diabetes, weight management and thyroid disease.

    He also provides gender-affirming care.

He completed a pituitary medicine fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and also has a keen interest in technological advances in the management of diabetes including continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps.

To learn more, read through his areas of care.

  • Dr Shoung will discuss your medical history and symptoms you have been experiencing, perform an examination and organise the appropriate blood and urine tests to investigate for a hormone abnormality.

  • In order to receive a Medicare rebate, you will require a referral from a GP every 12 months or a Specialist every 3 months.

Consultations can still be organised without a referral, however you will not receive a medicare rebate.

  • Dr Shoung understands taking the time of your day to travel from a consultation can be difficult. Many of his patients live rurally or interstate.

An initial face-to-face consultation is usually conducted, then Dr Shoung offers video telehealth follow-up appointments at his North Sydney practice.

In certain circumstances, Dr Shoung may be able to provide a video telehealth consultation for your first appointment.
