Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age and is characterised by:

  • irregular menstrual cycles

  • hirsutism (excess hair growth)

  • acne

  • polycystic ovaries on ultrasound.

Hirsutism and acne are a result of excess androgens (male hormones) being produced.

It is a complex condition often associated with insulin resistance, weight gain, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, infertility, and cardiometabolic disease.

Investigation includes the use of blood tests and imaging. Management focuses on addressing metabolic concerns, regulating menstrual cycles and symptom management which can differ between patients and may include lifestyle modification and medications.
