What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is condition related to insulin resistance: meaning the body’s cells cannot use the insulin produced to take up glucose, subsequently causing blood glucose levels to increase.

Common symptoms associated with high blood glucose levels include increased urination and thirst, as well as blurry vision.

It is often associated with lifestyle and genetic factors, and whilst it starts with insulin resistance, over time it may lead to insulin deficiency if not managed appropriately.

For this reason, it usually managed with a combination of a balanced diet, regular exercise and medications including tablets and weekly injections. However, if the body is not making enough insulin, starting insulin injections may be required.

Your Endocrinologist will prescribe the best medications for your situation which can be dependent on any associated weight issues, heart disease and/or kidney disease.
