What is Gestational Diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is caused by insulin resistance due to placental hormones.
It is important to manage blood glucose levels to reduce the risk of complications both the mother and baby. As such, there are specific blood glucose targets for gestational diabetes to reduce potential complications during pregnancy.
Management revolves around lifestyle management including dietary modifications, regular walking and regular blood glucose monitoring. If blood glucose levels are still elevated your Endocrinologist will advise you treatment options including oral tablets and insulin injections.
Gestational diabetes increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Long-term lifestyle modifications are important to reduce this risk.
